Let’s talk a little about this rune, shall we? It keeps popping up for me. Interestingly enough, it’s all about inheritance and property and I recently went through the process of buying a house only to take the option out. It’s been nagging at me, did I make the right decision?

Let’s figure it out!

Odal (or Othala) originated in the Elder Futhark, it is not contained in the Younger Futhark. (source) It represents the “O” sound. It’s most strongly associated with inheritance, some of the laws it represented are still in place in Scandinavia today.

This rune was unfortunately misinterpreted by the Nazis during World War II. Some white supremacist groups still use it today to represent their misguided ideas.

But at it’s heart, this rune is about ancestry. It symbolizes the connection you feel to your ancestors, even those you have never met and your yearning to leave a legacy. It represents a home and wealth, something you can pass along to the next generation.

I have always been drawn to genealogy, I’ve been researching my own familial origins since around 2000. I can’t help but think that maybe this rune is telling me to take another look, there may be something I’ve missed. Or maybe I did make a mistake in not purchasing a home.

I’ll continue to reflect on it.
